POSSIBLE NEXT NEW CAMERA: Samsung SL720
The existing EXTRA-LAST in-house digital camera – which we can now shamefully reveal to be a Canon PowerShot 710 IS – has broken. Not totally broken but broken enough to be deemed technically broken, therefore some budget has been set aside to have it replaced during the 09/10 financial period.
This has come as quite a relief, as it wasn’t particularly good or aspirational, especially when being used by someone who’s more than happy to casually dismiss other people’s cameras as being shit without so much as reading a review or seeing what the photos look like.
The Samsung SL720 probably won’t be particularly great, but it’s been a good 18 months since we last thought about getting a new camera so we’ve got to start somewhere with the tireless research and the putting out of ‘feelers’. And just reading the reviews at Amazon feels like cheating, as does just getting the prettiest/cheapest one they’ve got in TESCO.

The A710 was my old camera too! Spent AGES (well, about 2 weeks and 3 trips to jessops) looking at other cameras and painstakingly reading reviews.
Settled for the canon SX200IS as it seems to be the A710′s spiritual successor. It still has the same features, including full manual control and scene features, but comes with 12MP, 12X zoom and HD video recording.
Im pretty pleased with it, but i find the low light performance in auto mode a bit crap compared to the 710 due to its tendancy to assign high ISOs of 800, and the noise reduction looks worse than the A710s. The A710 was just noisy, which looks more natural than blurry jpegginess.
So – im still not completely convinced that this is the camera im really looking for. Need to test it out more.
I just want my A710 back, but with the SX200′s resolution, zoom and HD video!

I’ve got an old Canon D300 up on blocks in my driveway if you’re interested. I kept it under a tarp but there is some some mould growing around the depth of field preview button, and some gypsies stole the lens cap. Comes with the standard lens plus a Sigma 70-200 zoom. Must collect.

The 360 degree product tour is undeniably impressive, but with an RRP of £359 I think I’ll be passing. Unless anyone’s got a cut & shut MOT failure they want getting shot of?

Fewer megapixels are better at this point.
To point at what Andy said, the reason people see such noise and awful low-light sensitivity lately is that manufacturers, for marketing reasons, are making the CCD density too high, and each sensor element is therefore smaller and less effective.
As Ken Rockwell would say, unless you’re doing poster-sized prints, you don’t need more than 6 or 8MP anyway, and that’s on a large SLR sensor, not one of those tiny P+S ones.
(I recently replaced a PowerShot 530 with a 590is, and I wish the 590is had fewer pixels and better low-light. The 530′s lower density was a feature. Image stabilisation is nice, though.)

Poor low light performance rules. All inside photos from my (shite old Optio) camera produce orange, blurred images where people regularly appear twice connected by fuzzy blurs, have half of their face de-materialising, or invisible limbs. I can’t be bothered to delete them as I go, and I never give up trying, so they end up on my computer, I’ve got at least 5 gig of such photos. They’re great, they scare the kids.

Lumix TZ6 or 7 if you’ve got the money. Takes a good photo and HD video, but most importantly weighs a ton so when one of your readers becomes a stalker (most likely Weatherbox) you can use it to bludgeon him to death. And photograph the results for an update.

Nice bit of spam from laltra there, I actually read it three times trying to make sense of it, wondering if I was having a stroke before realising it was spam and that’s why nothing after the first sentence made any sense.
That probably says more about me needing to cut down on the Cinzano than laltras eloquence though I suspect.

Why’s this post so popular with the spammers? Is there some kind of honeypot trap going on here?
Or is this some kind of sacrificial post where you get them all to post here and don’t delete them and then they’ll leave all the other posts alone?
When are we going to have word verificiation laughs again? The place just doesn’t seem the same without it
